Topic: Follow Christ Scripture: Luke 9:57-62

Follow Jesus Christ first over everything else!

Conversations with Jesus (the cost of following Jesus) -

A man said to Jesus "I will follow you wherever you go.  Jesus said, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." This shows that the Lord is looking only forward to what is coming and not looking back. He has a purpose to accomplish and if we follow him we need to look forward toward what he wants us to do which is to evangelize and pray for forgiveness.  Not to worry about earthly matters.

He asked the man, Follow Me".   The Man replied, "Lord first let me go and bury my Father",  Jesus said, Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.

This conversation shows that the man's heart and priority is at home over doing God's work.  If his desire is more for himself, he will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Another said, I will follow you Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my Family.  The Lord stated "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God".  This shows that the man's heart was at home and not  fully focused on the Lord.

These stories are meant to get us to look at our own hearts. What is our heart truly focused on.  We must guard our heart to insure we are focused on the Lord first.  We must beware of any drift away which we may be experiencing.  Refocus on Jesus and why he sacrificed his life for our sins.
