A King Like the Nations (Part 1)

January 14, 2024 Preacher: Caleb Bunch Series: 1 Samuel

Topic: Providence Scripture: 1 Samuel 9

Preliminary Points

1. The people were given a perfect king to rule them, yet they were still not statisfied and rather wanted a "king of the nations."

2. Saul was wicked from the start

The people looked at the physical aspects of saul and saw him fit to rule while God looked at the spirtual aspects of Saul

V2. Saul is "taller" than everyone else, and "tall" people are people that should be brought down low.

V3-V10. Things that are revealed by the search for the donkey.

1. Saul is not a very good overseer

2. Donkeys are very closely related to kingship and symbolized the idea of humility and yet saul could not find the donkeys. And furthemore, he was ready to give up in his responsibilties to go home (Foreshadowing).

  • Even before he was crowned king, Saul was showing the bad properties that Samuel had beforehand warned the people of
  • Even though saul was a failure and inherntly wicked, God was going to use him to his own glory.

V18. Samuel had led israel for almost 70 years at this point and the people rejected him. Even through this rejection, Samuel was not envious of Saul but was humble.

Saul on the otherhand was very condesending and rude when first meeting Samuel. He had not greeting or respect for him.

When told he was to be king, Saul almost cowardly questions Samuel,"Why me?"

Application

1. Trust Gods providence- Eveything goes to Gods will. Every smalll thing is for some purpose. God plans out  everything for our good.

2. Examine people through Biblical categories.

3. Look for a better king-Jesus is the good shepherd and he never gives up on his sheep.
